Ernest experienced an NDE in 1991 after a severe injury from broken glass. During an argument at home after drinking with family, his uncle's anvil punched through a storm door. While pulling his arm back, a large chunk of glass fell and cut him to the bone at the elbow, causing severe bleeding. His wife wrapped it with a towel and got help from his aunt and sister. About three miles from home on the way to the hospital, he told his wife to tell his son he loved him, then slumped unconscious.
Upon arrival at the hospital, a nurse pulled him from the car with no heartbeat or pulse. He was later told he had been dead for at least 5 minutes. During this time, he watched them work on him from afar in an out-of-body experience. He then observed firefighters standing over him as they loaded him into an ambulance. He heard the EMT say "He'll never make it. He has no blood left." Due to foggy weather preventing helicopter transport, he was rushed 30 miles to a hospital in Indiana, then to Kentucky when they couldn't help him there. He underwent 11 hours of surgery to save his life. The experience included intense awareness and time distortion, with everything seeming slowed down. He felt very sad and lost during the experience but maintained incredibly vivid senses. Years later in 2014, Ernest believes he had an astral projection experience, but something in his mind told him he belonged in his body and not to try it again. The NDE remains vivid in his memory like a time capsule where everything is still perfectly preserved. This was the first time he shared the experience beyond family and friends.
