Don experienced a profound NDE following a motorcycle accident on June 23, 1979, in Murphysboro, Illinois. He had just crossed into Illinois and removed his helmet when he felt an unusual sense of foreboding. Despite stopping twice to check his bike due to feeling like his "guardian angel was kicking him on his head and shoulders," he continued riding. Just before the accident, the feeling became so strong that he put his helmet back on, which likely saved his life. He was broadsided by a teenage driver cutting him off.
After the impact, Don saw himself lying in the street from above, as if looking down from a tree. He continued moving up and away from the crash scene, thinking he needed to keep track so he could find his way back. The earth became smaller until it and the sun were just specks among millions of other specks. He wondered where he was going and experienced profound peace and tranquility unlike anything before. He sensed shadowy silhouettes around him and felt that the world would be okay without him, he was forgiven for his sins, and experienced pure love. A presence gave him a choice to go be with God or return to his body to be there for his daughter. He chose to return for his daughter and immediately came to while receiving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in the street. He had another out-of-body experience in the hospital where he moved through walls and ceiling but doesn't remember another journey to the afterlife. The experience was validated when his wife gave birth to a daughter, though they didn't know the baby's gender at the time of the NDE. When Misty was born and handed to him, she opened her eyes wide, smiled, and cooed as if to say "good choice dad." Don sees divine intervention in the timing of putting on his helmet and the foreknowledge about his daughter.
