Richard S was doing flood duty in the Army in June 2008 when he decided to get a saline IV to rehydrate after working in extreme heat. The saline bags had been left in the sun all day and were approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit. After being hooked up, he became dizzy with blurred vision and profuse sweating. His eyes rolled back and his heart stopped, causing his body to go into shock. A nearby Army medic resuscitated him. During the brief clinical death of less than 30 seconds, Richard became part of something he cannot fully describe. He experienced no pain, was euphoric with no anxiety, and knew he had died but was very happy about it. The experience seemed to last much longer than the actual 30 seconds. When resuscitated, his pain returned and he was angry at the medic for bringing him back. Since this experience, Richard has studied parapsychology since the early 1990s and believes "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear." He now has certainty about the afterlife and is ready to return "home," feeling that his current life is dragging. The military mishap with overheated saline causing cardiac arrest gave him a glimpse of an existence he describes as absolute delight, leaving him with changed beliefs about death and the afterlife. Despite no visual or auditory experiences of beings or realms, the profound euphoria and timelessness convinced him of continued existence after death.
