At only 2-3 months old, Dianne experienced a life-threatening case of pneumonia that led to an extraordinary out-of-body experience she would vividly remember throughout her life. During the severe illness with high fever and respiratory distress, she found herself floating up against the ceiling, looking down at a desperately ill baby lying on its stomach. Initially not recognizing the baby as herself, she felt overwhelming empathy and sadness, unconsciously saying "that poor baby is so sick."
From her elevated position, Dianne observed remarkable details impossible for an infant to normally perceive or remember. She saw a glass humidifier with a rick-rack pattern like Charlie Brown's shirt emitting steam, recognized the baby had pneumonia, and gained a complete panoramic view of the room. The makeshift nursery was actually a dining room with furniture pushed aside to accommodate the crib. She noted specific details including wallpaper with ships, olive drab full-length curtains, two large windows facing the front of the house with bushes outside, all observed in darkness while the house was quiet. Years later, at age four in their new house, Dianne recounted this experience to her mother in precise detail. Her mother was astounded, repeatedly asking "who told you this?" as they had moved from that house when Dianne was still very young. Every detail was confirmed accurate - the pneumonia at three months, the downstairs dining room converted to accommodate her crib for closer monitoring, the vaporizer, wallpaper pattern, and room layout. The experience was so vivid that 56 years later she remembers it with perfect clarity. The profound empathy and guilt she felt during the experience became a defining characteristic, though paradoxically she struggles with natural empathy as an adult and must consciously work at it. The deep guilt she experienced watching the sick baby manifested throughout childhood as hiding illnesses from her mother to avoid the guilt of being sick again. Additional psychic experiences include sensing her mother's death during surgery before being informed, and seeing her guardian angel as a grey, undulating vapor during a traumatic period in her marriage.
