Dave experienced multiple near-death events, with the primary one occurring in October 1973 when he was hospitalized with collapsed lungs. After a week of severe flu and hallucinations, he was admitted with both lungs collapsed, with only the top half of his right lung functioning. During his 15-day ordeal without initial medication, he experienced profound altered states where he could float in and out of an alternative reality at will, finding himself in a state of bliss with brighter colors and heightened senses.
His experiences included traveling through a tunnel he found comforting, with walls providing security and light ahead to follow. He also experienced reality transforming into different scenes that would shatter like glass when interrupted by medical staff. One notable scene was an Australian wild west bar where he sat at a table with a saloon girl behind him, feeling her presence without seeing her, surrounded by an atmospheric gathering. He developed the ability to control his movement between ordinary reality and this heightened state during his extended illness. The medical severity included three patients undergoing the same operation that day, with Dave being the only survivor after complications requiring intensive care. Throughout the experience, he felt no fear, describing it as "fascination override," and came to understand quantum reality instantaneously, years before reading about Heisenberg's theories. He experienced overwhelming love and bliss, losing all fear of death, and feeling the other world was more real than our physical reality with its grey quality in comparison. Dave also reports a connected experience where his friend Larry died of a heart attack calling out his name at the exact moment Dave collapsed in Holland with chest pains and breathing difficulties. This synchronicity, along with an earlier 1971 car accident where he observed his body from above while trapped in wreckage, reinforced his understanding of consciousness existing beyond the physical body. The experiences left him with enhanced intuitive abilities and complete trust in his instincts.
