Colleen experienced a massive saddle pulmonary embolism that nearly claimed her life, with complete obstruction of both pulmonary arteries. Two days before the event, she developed shortness of breath with a heart rate of 144 and oxygen saturation around 85%, but refused medical attention to avoid jeopardizing scheduled knee surgery. In the early morning hours of June 12th, after getting up to use the bathroom, she had a severe cough that triggered a catastrophic medical crisis with oxygen saturation plummeting to 45% and heart rate soaring to 158.
During this life-threatening event, while her husband prepared for CPR and awaited emergency services, Colleen had a profound near-death experience. Everything suddenly went dark and she found herself moving through a tunnel toward a destination of overwhelming peace and love. She described moving on what felt like a silent escalator toward a light that grew bigger and brighter but was never unpleasant or dazzling. All pain and suffering completely vanished, replaced by indescribable bliss and a feeling of being completely loved and at peace. As she moved closer to the light, she felt increasingly aware that continuing meant leaving the physical world permanently. Time lost all meaning during the experience, and her senses seemed to merge into one unified awareness. She felt a sense of unity with the universe and understood that death was nothing to fear. The experience was characterized by incredible peace, happiness, and a feeling of coming home to a familiar yet extraordinary place. Colleen was pulled back to consciousness when she heard her name being called, returning to awareness of her body and the severe medical crisis. The blockage in her left artery spontaneously broke away and went peripheral, saving her life. She underwent emergency treatment including catheter-directed thrombolysis and spent five days in the ICU. A complication with her arterial line led to compartment syndrome requiring emergency fasciotomy. The experience left her with lasting changes including decreased anxiety about death and a more relaxed approach to life's challenges.
