In 1963, eleven-year-old David was hit by a car while riding his bike, with his body thrown 40 feet from impact, suffering an open compound fracture to his left fibula and tibia plus a broken left knee. Though he doesn't remember the accident itself, he vividly recalls watching himself being loaded into an old hearse-style ambulance from outside his body. He then found himself floating through white clouds with no sky, ground, trees, or animals, moving toward an open gate where intensely bright but soft light emanated. He observed a long line of people four or five abreast entering the gate. At the gate, he was greeted by his deceased grandmother and her sister (whom he'd never met in life). His grandmother told him to go back as it wasn't his time, but he continued approaching. The sister raised her arm from the mist, pointed, and said "look." When David turned, he saw an ambulance traveling down a road about to go under an overpass. As he turned back to his grandmother, he suddenly opened his eyes inside that very ambulance passing under the overpass. He awoke later in the hospital with a full leg cast. His first words to his mother were "I saw grandma," but she hushed him, saying they'd discuss it later - which never happened. David questions whether it was real, wishes he could have entered the gate to see if heaven has trees and animals, but knows he experienced something beyond this life.
