Darrell experienced a severe heart attack on December 1, 2012, and was rushed to the hospital where he was placed on life support for seventeen days. He flatlined three times total, with one episode lasting 12 minutes. During this extended flatline, he left his body and hovered about 3 feet above his hospital bed, clearly observing his physical form below and his wife sitting beside the left side of his bed. A beautiful blue shimmering light appeared between them, communicating a profound and powerful sense of love. He quickly recognized this as the presence of the creator of the universe and the Holy Spirit, initially thinking it might be God himself before realizing God is a person, not a light. After a few minutes, the entire scene dissipated. His next conscious memory was 17 days later when they removed him from the induced coma and ventilator. Upon awakening with his wife holding his hand, his first words were "I am going to serve the Lord the rest of my life" - words that came spontaneously without premeditation. This marked a dramatic transformation from being a nominal churchgoer to becoming a born-again, committed Christian. The Holy Spirit placed an insatiable desire within him to know God personally, leading to thousands of hours of Bible study. The experience brought lasting changes including intimate friendships and complete dedication to serving God.
