Charles had a heart attack at work on June 27, 2017, with a blocked left anterior artery requiring stent placement. During the procedure at 10:02 AM, while conscious but looking away from the surgical area at a clock, his heart suddenly stopped. He was instantly transported to a large room filled with rows of tables where scientists in 1950s-style white lab coats were conducting research - looking through microscopes, handling test tubes, taking notes. The scene was peaceful and quiet, with an even gender balance unusual for that era. Most strikingly, everything appeared in deeply saturated black-and-white, like an old film. Charles stood observing the scientists who didn't notice him, feeling calm and peaceful with no sense of time passing. After what seemed an indefinite period but was actually just three minutes, he was suddenly back on the operating table at 10:05 AM as doctors used the defibrillator to restart his heart. He had curled into a fetal position during the shock. Charles interprets this experience as his unconscious brain creating a calming distraction with the message that "medical science will save you," possibly using black-and-white imagery to save cognitive bandwidth during the medical emergency. The experience left him with greater appreciation for what the human brain can accomplish.
