Charlene experienced a heroin overdose on February 12, 2013, that led to clinical death with cessation of breathing and heart function. After deliberately overdosing alone in her room, she moved to another room to be found, accompanied by her dog Alice. Upon losing consciousness, she experienced herself awakening into an overwhelming sense of peace, serenity, and love, finding herself in another realm where she could see between the human world and a beautiful otherworldly place. She was met by a group of deceased family members and friends, plus two unknown beings, in a location with multicolored silken grass-like ground and a golden-yellow sky. The environment felt perfect - no need for breathing, eating, sleeping, or pain. When her family members told her it wasn't her time and she needed to return, she argued with them but was suddenly back in her body with paramedics working on her. The experience left her with enhanced sensory abilities including telepathic communication with her children, heightened hearing to the point of being overwhelming, and the ability to know things she shouldn't know about people and events. She found it difficult to socialize afterward due to being able to hear others' thoughts and detect lies. The experience confirmed her belief in something greater than earthly life with a higher purpose, though she struggles with the isolation that comes from her enhanced abilities.
