At age 11, Chris and friends attempted a "fainting game" learned from other schools, using hyperventilation and blood flow restriction to induce unconsciousness. After failed attempts in the schoolyard, they tried again in the school lobby where Chris lost consciousness for 1 minute 40 seconds according to a friend's watch. He suddenly found himself in another dimension - a dark yet bright, soft, shaded space where he floated weightlessly without a body but retained his consciousness and identity. He felt utterly peaceful, comfortable, and at one with everything, experiencing no physical or emotional tension. The state was characterized by perfect rightness and direct experience without memory of earthly life. After some time, he was suddenly "sucked" back into his body with a "whooshing" sensation. Upon reconnecting with physical reality and its memories, his immediate thought was "Oh no, not THIS again!" - referring to all earthly existence including family and relationships as tiresome and effortful. A teacher warned him about the danger of death from restricted blood flow. The experience subtly shifted his life trajectory, devaluing materiality and traditional success. At 17 he became partially psychotic and clinically depressed, struggling with mental health for years. He believes the NDE made him take an unconventional, more difficult life path while possibly preventing suicide.
