Byun was working at a construction site carrying bricks up temporary stairs on a four-story building when he fell with the bricks to the bottom. After being taken to the hospital and declared dead, he saw himself lying on a bed covered with a white sheet and his sister collapsed and wailing. He experienced soul separation and went up into the sky, seeing Seoul city, entering a commercial airplane to observe passengers and cockpit, then traveling worldwide to see Christ the Redeemer statue, Eiffel Tower, London Bridge, Sydney Opera House, and Hong Kong locations. His entire life played back from earliest childhood in super-fast but crystal-clear detail, including painful moments of stealing food when hungry, swearing, spitting, and hitting siblings. He felt tremendous heart pain and deep repentance while being unable to avoid watching. He was pulled through pastel-colored fog toward extremely bright light where he felt perfect peace and communicated through thought/feeling with an unseen existence about love. He could instantly travel anywhere by thought, visiting his siblings in their hut. After seeing fireworks outside a window, he struggled to move and fell, eventually learning he had returned from the morgue. Post-experience, he could see people's hidden thoughts and pain. Years later, he successfully guided colleagues around Hong Kong using knowledge from his NDE, amazing them by knowing specific locations like a hidden fruit stall.
