Catherine experienced two NDEs during childbirth complications. In 1962, during her first childbirth, nurses administered Demerol despite no pain, causing extreme spinal pain and stopped labor. Multiple medication cycles created unbearable pain. In the delivery room, ether provided no relief. Taking a deep breath, she "let go."
Suddenly, Catherine was overlooking the delivery table surrounded by worried medical staff. Free from pain, she felt incredible love for them and tried to reassure them: "It's okay - I don't hurt anymore." When they couldn't hear her, a male voice said "Your baby needs you." She noticed gray swirling mist she calls love - incredible love beyond imagination. The voice repeated with emphasis. She then saw a disturbing future vision: her distraught husband giving their daughter to his stern mother, remarrying, and their daughter being rejected by the new family, becoming sad and sickly while the grandmother beamed. Declaring "No way in hell will she have my baby," Catherine returned, scaring the staff who administered full ether for forceps delivery. In 1969, during her second childbirth, a spinal block complication caused numbness spreading upward and loss of breathing ability. The mysterious Voice returned, saying "I'll help you breathe" and compelled her to follow his breathing rhythm. The baby was pushed out as the spinal had paralyzed her diaphragm. These experiences taught Catherine that the central message is LOVE and eliminated her fear of death.
