Candy was a small freshman placed in a senior study hall when a large 6'7" senior picked him up from behind with one arm across his shoulders during horseplay. The class found it hilarious, but the senior's arm had slipped to Candy's neck, cutting off his air supply. Unable to get support or escape, darkness crept in until everything went black and silent. Unlike anesthesia, his consciousness remained highly alert. He heard nothing but knew he could hear, saw only darkness but knew he could see. He felt like a puddle of liquid poured out millimeters thin, yet maintained awareness from a single point of all-encompassing observation. The darkness was velvety, soft, and comforting, not frightening. After about 5 minutes in this space, he became aware of the senior's panic and desperate concern for his wellbeing. He came to on the floor and quickly assured the senior he was okay despite his embarrassment. The experience showed him that consciousness continues apart from the body, existing in a dark but comfortable space between life and death. He maintained his Mormon faith and developed serendipitous abilities, like knowing to save a train seat for his cousin who unexpectedly appeared.
