Bess was being induced for childbirth due to high blood pressure when she passed out during IV insertion. The nurse was pushing the needle down hard trying to place the catheter when Bess felt lightheaded and lost consciousness. Her baby's heartbeat was lost for 12 minutes during this event. While unconscious, she had an out-of-body experience where she was floating in the hospital hallway, slightly elevated, looking into her room. She observed the scene from above with everything very still and silent. She also saw her stepmother's sister, who worked on the labor and delivery floor, trying to peek into the room to see what was happening. Days later, her husband confirmed that everything she saw looking into the room was accurate. Her stepmother also confirmed that her sister had indeed been trying to peek into the room during the emergency. The experience was peaceful despite being frightening, and she felt like she was given a choice whether to return or move on.
