In June 1968, Catherine underwent an illegal abortion that resulted in severe systemic infection. The supposed "nurse" had already caused two deaths from similar procedures. Catherine experienced tremendous pain throughout her body and felt terribly ill. Her partner carried her to the car and rushed her to the hospital during a thunderstorm. At a railroad crossing, the experience began.
Catherine felt herself lifting out of her body, though she did not see her body below. The excruciating pain immediately subsided, and she simultaneously KNEW she was dying. She experienced being absorbed into what she later described as "the arms of God," experiencing the most powerful, profound love and peace imaginable. Every hurt, pain, regret, and negative aspect of her life was erased and no longer mattered. The only thing she felt was unbelievable peace and love - far greater than anything experienced on earth. She felt she had gone Home at last, experiencing belonging, meaning, and completeness. The doctors later reported they were "so far out there, they didn't think they had a prayer of bringing me back." The experience permanently eliminated Catherine's fear of death, which she considers the greatest gift she could have received. She gained lasting understanding that we are not judged and that God's love for everyone is beyond description - vast and profound. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience powerfully depicts divine love and being absorbed into "the arms of God," consistent with biblical descriptions of God's overwhelming love and peace. The erasure of pain and regrets aligns with biblical promises of divine comfort. The sense of "going Home" reflects biblical concepts of eternal dwelling with God. Unbiblical elements: The statement "we are not judged" could be interpreted as contradicting biblical teachings about judgment, though it might refer to condemnation rather than evaluation. The experience emphasizes God's love without mentioning justice or holiness.
