Yon experienced an NDE at age 18 during her third surgery for intestinal obstruction in April 1977. During the operation, her pulse became critically unstable, forcing the surgical team to stop the procedure and suture her without completing the surgery. The medical crisis was severe enough that the surgery had to be abandoned to preserve her life.
Suddenly during the surgery, Yon's consciousness floated to the ceiling where she looked down on her body below. She observed two doctors and two nurses operating on her while placing her organs in a large basin. She could see her parents crying outside the operating room, yet felt no fear or distress about the situation. The observation from above provided a complete view of the surgical scene including the medical staff's actions and her parents' emotional state beyond the operating room walls. She then flew through a very dark tunnel at extremely high speed, with the sound of hammering echoing through the tunnel. At the far end of the tunnel, she could see very bright light that appeared as a swirling mixture of yellow, white, and red colors. The tunnel experience felt like flying at the speed of light through complete darkness toward this brilliant illumination. Despite the dramatic nature of the experience, she felt calm and peaceful throughout, with a sense of happiness rather than fear. She was unable to exit the tunnel before waking up in the hospital room with sutures. Following the NDE, she made a complete recovery without requiring additional surgery, which she considers remarkable given the initial prognosis. The experience left her with moderate life changes including reduced material desires, certainty about the afterlife, and an exceptionally vivid memory of the event that remains clearer than other memories from that time period. When she later told her family about seeing the surgery, they confirmed her observations about the surgical procedure involving her intestines in the basin.
