William experienced a heart attack in Spring 2005 while building a birdhouse with his children. His young daughter's quick action in calling 911 saved his life after he lost consciousness. He required a stent placement in his right ventricle, and the heart specialist described it as "touch and go" and told him he was "lucky to be alive." During the event, paramedics recorded his blood pressure at a critical 40 over 20.
During the heart attack, William could not breathe and felt his heart beating progressively slower as he heard his children crying out to him before darkness overtook him. His consciousness was pulled into a dark void where he experienced a sequence of distinct emotions and thoughts. His first reaction was curiosity, wondering if this was what Elvis felt when he died. Then anger arose as he thought Death was cowardly for sneaking up from behind rather than confronting him face-to-face. As he contemplated and gradually accepted that he was dying, he felt the presence of a Being who communicated that he was dying but that it would be okay. In this void, William experienced no pain, only a relaxing, pleasant sensation that felt weird but peaceful. Despite the darkness, he remained fully conscious and aware that he was in a specific place and not alone. The Being's presence emanated pure, unconditional love that was overwhelming in its intensity. This presence felt deeply familiar, as if William had always known this Being. The love was so powerful that words cannot adequately describe it. When William thought to the Being that he did not want to die in front of his children and couldn't do that to them, he suddenly became fully conscious again. He heard a paramedic announcing his critically low blood pressure. The experience has made him more compassionate and understanding of people, more patient in relationships, and absolutely certain that an afterlife exists. As someone who works with patients who have shared their own NDEs, he never expected to experience one himself.
