Shia experienced an NDE at age 18 during her third surgery for intestinal obstruction when her implanted defibrillator began shocking her rapidly. She felt her heart beating extremely fast with severe pain in her chest and stomach, experiencing tunnel vision before losing consciousness. She passed out on the bed after experiencing approximately 10 minutes of distress, with the defibrillator delivering multiple shocks.
During her unconscious state, she found herself as pure consciousness without a physical body, feeling completely weightless. She existed in a dark void that paradoxically seemed full of life, with a grainy, static-like visual quality similar to television static but black. She had perfect 360-degree vision and could see clearly without her glasses for the first time. She felt like a single grain of sand among infinite grains making up the void, sensing that each grain possessed consciousness. She experienced complete oneness with this infinite consciousness, understanding what unity truly meant by being part of it. The most striking aspect was the complete absence of fear, worry, or questions - just perfect peace and calm. She felt more peaceful than ever before in her life, simply taking in the experience without her usual anxious thoughts. Despite her young daughter sleeping in another room, she felt no concern or attachment to earthly matters. Time seemed to have no meaning in this void state. After regaining consciousness, she initially dismissed the experience as fainting. Only after a week passed did she have a flashback remembering the full experience. The memory remains crystal clear years later, and she has completely lost her fear of death. She has also experienced shadows and other paranormal phenomena since the NDE, though she cannot recall all details of her time on the other side.
