Shawnise experienced cardiac arrest and was clinically dead for approximately 20 minutes following severe complications from a tubal ligation surgery. The surgery resulted in a perforated bowel that went untreated for days, leading to life-threatening infections including sepsis. She developed acute hypoxic respiratory failure, acute renal failure, and congestive heart failure with only 10-15% blood pumping to her heart. While being monitored, she went into VT cardiac arrest and received CPR with 5 electrical shocks that broke her ribs.
During her 20-minute death, Shawnise's spirit instantaneously left her body and she felt herself leaving the weight of her physical form. She briefly heard the cry for help and "code blue" while observing the operations to save her life from outside her body. She felt no pain from the CPR or electrical shocks. She experienced being in a deep peaceful sleep state, floating towards a warm inviting light in a dark tunnel. She felt immortal, pure, and light as a feather floating effortlessly upward. The dark tunnel transformed into rays of vibrant futuristic colors in an endless space. She heard beautifully composed instruments and peaceful sounds that mesmerized her. She felt deeply connected, welcomed, loved, and forgiven - experiencing pure love and complete peace with no worry, stress, hunger, thirst or pain. She was able to see and hear prayers flowing past her like objects, knowing they belonged to her. She witnessed a specific flower in a garden - a burgundy to reddish lily with a translucent stem showing the flow of life and energy, which she recognized as a glimpse into paradise. Shawnise was in an induced coma for five days after resuscitation and wasn't expected to survive mentally intact. Her sister witnessed her lifeless eyes popped out of the sockets and the 20-minute resuscitation effort. Medical staff expressed disbelief at her survival given her low body temperature and extended time without oxygen. She required months of recovery including cardiac rehab and continues to take multiple medications with an implanted defibrillator.
