At age 2, Sandy fell through ice on the Ottawa River and went underwater, experiencing clinical death. Her brother screamed for help, and her uncle pulled her out after finding her by her snowsuit. She was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, declared gone, but her mother insisted she couldn't be dead. She was taken to the hospital in a coma and received a blood transfusion.
During her NDE, Sandy found herself in a white space she describes as Heaven, not in her body but somewhere else. She was aware of a presence with her - someone who communicated telepathically and showed her how wonderful life was. This being instilled in her an everlasting excitement for life and gave her an understanding that life is a miracle. She was told not to be afraid and received a message about helping others by sharing this excitement. The experience was on a cellular level, with the being emitting surround-sound-like communication. Sandy has no specific recall of the drowning incident itself but retained a vivid memory of the otherworldly experience. She describes feeling different throughout her life, always sensing that people weren't being their true selves. The experience left her with a strong desire to help others and do something for greater humanity. She always had a lingering memory of the experience but only understood it fully years later when she learned she had nearly died. Following the NDE, Sandy developed a deep spiritual path, eventually becoming a Medical Qigong Master and Doctor, an Acupuncturist, and a Taoist priest. She reports that the experience gave her an understanding that we are all one, that life is precious and never-ending, and that love is the answer. The being's message emphasized the continuous nature of life and the importance of sharing joy and excitement about life with others.
