Thomas was on the operating table awaiting hip surgery when he experienced a massive pulmonary embolism and ischemic stroke just before receiving anesthesia. He stopped breathing and experienced clinical death, requiring emergency transport from the Veterans Administration hospital to a university medical center for open-heart surgery to remove blood clots. He barely survived what doctors called a "Widowmaker" and was later told he was a medical marvel for surviving.
During his NDE, Thomas first found the operating room empty and bright, got off the table, and fell through a door, landing on grass at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Wearing only a hospital gown, he walked invisibly among people to a shelter where a funeral was taking place. He saw his wife and step-daughter crying and realized with horror it was his own funeral. Everything was in absolute silence. The scene went dark, then shifted to a different perspective where he watched his parents arguing in a white concrete block room, feeling as if he was in his mother's womb experiencing various scenes that seemed eternal. Thomas then awoke in a chair with a woman in a nurse's uniform and dark blue sweater standing in a dark room. She spoke to him telepathically without moving her mouth, telling him he was being sent back because it wasn't his time yet. After blacking out again, he experienced being on a couch unable to move (part of his coma), then saw a bright light like looking directly at the sun. He awoke to find his wife crying while holding his dog tags and hands. The medical team explained his near-fatal conditions and successful emergency surgery. Thomas reports being able to hear spirits now and having enhanced emotional sensitivity (clairsentience) since the experience. He saw his future, including his family's life if he had died.
