Sydney experienced severe pregnancy complications at 35 weeks, developing kidney and heart failure that caused flash pulmonary edema - she was drowning in her own fluids. The life-threatening situation required an emergency cesarean section under general anesthesia. Following the surgery, she was placed in a medically-induced coma for twenty hours while the medical team stabilized her condition.
During her NDE, Sydney found herself in a dark area where she, her deceased mother, and several unknown people were bathed in a blue-white glow. They appeared to be standing around what she recalls as a stone table. Her mother, who had passed away three and a half years earlier at age 53, appeared young and beautiful, looking about Sydney's age. Her mother held her hand while Sydney repeatedly wanted to leave, but her mother insisted she stay a little longer because she needed time to get better. Her mother revealed that Sydney had a beautiful baby daughter and emphasized that she had to go back because her daughter needed her. Sydney felt the experience lasted a long time, with a sense of timelessness where everything seemed to happen at once. The beings present seemed to be from heaven or a better place, creating an in-between or waiting place atmosphere. She experienced feelings of happiness, relief, and incredible joy during the encounter. When Sydney woke up twenty hours later, she was still intubated and couldn't speak. She had to write to communicate, asking about the date and time because it felt like much more time had passed. She felt profound gratitude for being alive. The experience left her certain that an afterlife exists and that her mother came from a heavenly place to guide her back to life for her newborn daughter's sake.
