Steve was at Stockton 99 Speedway in California watching NASCAR racing from the pit observation area when a catastrophic accident occurred. A race car came off the track, hit the fence, and continued along it, striking multiple people including Steve. The impact threw him approximately fifty feet according to his ex-wife who witnessed it. The accident injured fifty people and killed one person at the scene. Steve was not breathing and had no pulse, prompting CPR attempts that initially failed.
During his clinical death, Steve experienced looking down from on top of the scoreboard near where he had been standing. He could see everything clearly - where the car came off the track, hit the fence, knocked over fence posts and people, and eventually came to rest on its roof. After this out-of-body observation, he found himself at home in bed on a normal Sunday morning with his wife and children laughing together. His friend Bob's voice calling his name interrupted this scene. When Steve said he didn't want to leave his family, his wife told him he had to go and hurry back. Steve then experienced walking down a long, super-bright hallway that was almost blinding like the sun. He resisted going through the door at the end which opened to complete darkness. Something or someone helped guide him through, and he remembered gasping for air as his friend Bob said "I thought you were dead." The medical team had nearly given up on him, considering him one of the last to leave because they didn't think he'd survive transport. A medical helicopter was called but didn't take him. Steve survived with multiple internal injuries and about a 10% chance of surviving surgery. His wife was told he had even less chance of surviving until morning if he made it through surgery. He spent several weeks in the hospital and experienced recurring nightmares where his deceased friend Ed claimed Steve was supposed to be with him because he wasn't supposed to survive the accident.
