On October 27, 1990, Andre had a catastrophic motorcycle racing accident at the Grand National Final in Atlanta, Georgia. He crashed on an oil spill, suffering severe injuries including a badly broken left forearm and his leg caught in the bike forks. The internal bleeding was so severe it caused a heart attack and clinical death. He lost consciousness multiple times and eventually died from blood loss.
While dead, Andre heard alarms from machines and instantly felt no pain. He floated on the ceiling watching his body as nurse Vickie and three others rushed in. He then saw what looked like a highway filled with human figures with light shining from their navel area, heading toward a bright portal. He joined them and discovered telepathic communication worked across all languages - when he asked questions in Afrikaans or English, everyone heard in their own language. The group included people of many religions: Catholic, Baptist, Muslim, Atheist, Jew, Buddhist, Hindu, and tribal peoples. They told him they were going to purgatory where they would review EVERY decision made on earth and see how those affected God's plans and others. He was told "Time only exists on earth." He then felt an urgent need to leave and found himself at a dark river with a beautiful park on the other side. He saw his deceased grandmother (died 1982), father (died 1983), and dog Nicky (died 1970s). His father yelled in Afrikaans "Go back; we are not ready for you yet!" He returned via a road with small souls entering babies' bodies. When back in his room, nurse Vickie introduced him to Julie. Andre already knew Julie's name, shocking both nurses. Julie confirmed "I only saw you while you were flat lined." This verified his out-of-body observations. The experience led Andre to believe he must share God's love and his NDE story with others.
