In 2010, when Natalia was 7 years old and in first grade, she was eating lunch in the school cafeteria when she began choking on her food. She could not get any air and became panicked. A teacher laid her over her lap and repeatedly hit her back trying to dislodge the food. The choking episode lasted what felt like ages, during which she could not breathe, felt her heart rate slowing, and her eyes closed.
She was then surrounded by dark nothingness but wasn't particularly stressed - rather, she felt quite calm and at peace. She floated in a peaceful darkness and may have seen a type of purple energy standing across from her in the void. While in this state, she remembered thinking "What about my mom?" and feeling like she couldn't just die on her. She had a realization that she was going to die but it wasn't time yet because of her mother. The dark void experience was characterized by complete silence and an unusual sense of peace despite the life-threatening situation. She felt she shouldn't be there yet and needed to return for her mother's sake. Time seemed to not exist in this space. When she came back to her senses and started breathing again after coughing, she was confused and felt as if she had just woken from sleep. She was happy to be breathing again. The experience left her wondering about the blissful void and why she had been so calm while almost dying. She later shared the experience with friends, and one reported having a similar void experience during their own NDE.
