At age 7, Rebecca had a ruptured appendix with peritonitis on December 26, 2003. During emergency surgery, her heart stopped twice on the operating table. She experienced going through a color-changing tunnel from black to grey, feeling weightless and the most content she had ever been. She floated down to what seemed like solid ground in a pearly-grey cloudy place. A tall figure in a robe stepped out from behind a veil - someone she didn't know but felt she had known her whole life. She rushed over and hugged the figure's legs. Behind a smoke-like veil were hundreds of thousands of people rushing around like blurs. She then encountered two elderly people who asked "How is your mum?" - later identified by her mother as possibly her great-grandparents based on their description. When told it was time to go, she resisted saying "I don't want to go. I really like it here." Before returning, the guardian figure warned her "Bad things will happen but I want you to know it will be all right." Indeed, her parents divorced the following year, her father died suddenly in 2007, she was sexually assaulted, and her siblings were taken into care. The doctor said if her heart had stopped a third time, they wouldn't have resuscitated her.
