In June 1973, while hitchhiking across Canada, Patti was attacked by a man who attempted to strangle her after she tried to escape his vehicle. As she was being strangled and losing consciousness, she experienced a kaleidoscope vision where she was watching multiple TV-like screens showing different times in her life, specifically her hitchhiking experiences. She saw her mother pulling at her not to go hitchhiking, a girlfriend expressing concern, a TV news program about a murdered hitchhiker, and other hitchhiking situations. The scenes went round and round in the kaleidoscope. She then felt herself going through a light, bright area that wasn't a defined tunnel but an area of extreme peace and light where she felt weightless. She became aware of a voice asking "Have you learned your lesson yet?" to which she thought "Yes, but unfortunately, it's too late now." The response was "It's not your time yet. You still have work to do." Part of her wanted to continue with the light due to its peacefulness and love. When she awoke, the attacker had released his grip and she escaped into the forest. Police later indicated her description matched a serial rapist in the area. The experience profoundly affected her life, making her contemplate her purposeful work and never truly fear death, knowing something special happens after death.
