On November 28, 2018, Lee experienced a ruptured 10.5cm abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) that began as severe pain during church service. Initially thought to be kidney stones, he was rushed to emergency surgery where the aneurysm ruptured en route. With only a 5% survival rate for a 5cm AAA (his was twice that size), he lost 8 pints of blood and coded multiple times, experiencing clinical death at least twice during his ordeal.
During his first experience, Lee found himself in a dark, warm place with glowing stones in brilliant colors containing ancient writings he couldn't read but understood. These stones had arrows pointing forward, leading him home, which he understood as "the Word" from John's Gospel. In his second, more dramatic experience, his entire life flashed before him with complete clarity - years passing in seconds. He witnessed not only his actions but their ripple effects on countless lives, feeling pride for some decisions and shame for others, though experiencing no external judgment. In his third and most impactful experience, Lee was held by an overwhelmingly loving presence like a parent holding a baby, with heartbeats merging. He was too awestruck to speak but knew they communicated before being gently released back to life. This presence conveyed that choices have consequences without condemnation, and filled him with universal love he could feel in every cell. Lee spent 11 days in ICU, lost function below his ribcage including kidneys and intestines, had his right leg turn black, underwent multiple surgeries, and had to relearn to walk. Despite this, he recovered, married his fiancée in the hospital, and now speaks widely about his experience, emphasizing that death has no sting and is just the beginning.
