On January 11, 1986, 25-year-old Laura was in a severe car accident in Chicago when a van ran a red light and struck the passenger side where she was sitting. The impact caused their car to spin, and Laura said "Call on Jesus, He'll help us" before losing consciousness. She had to be extracted from the damaged door and was transported by ambulance to the hospital, unconscious throughout.
While her body was in the emergency room, Laura found herself in a spiritual realm where Jesus asked if she wanted to see where she was. She was kneeling at Jesus's feet, crying and begging to live. Looking up, she saw Jesus sitting on a tall white chair next to God, who was partially obscured by a white cloud. Jesus turned to God and asked, "Could she live?" God motioned something to Jesus, who then stood up and joyfully proclaimed with raised hands, "He said Yes! He said Yes!" as if signaling to others. Laura immediately returned to her body and awoke in the hospital. Despite intending to keep the experience private, the first thing she told her husband was "I was in Heaven and saw Jesus." She had suffered 6 broken bones (4 ribs, 2 pelvic), a punctured lung, bruised liver, and internal bleeding. She spent a week in ICU with a chest tube, then three more weeks recovering in the hospital. The experience was characterized by bright white surroundings in heaven, clear interaction with Jesus and God, and Laura's complete conviction of its reality. She describes knowing without doubt that God and Jesus are always with us, guiding and leading for our highest good. The experience remains crystal clear to her decades later.
