On April 29, 2003, Kevin was riding his motorcycle home from work on a dark, wet evening when he was struck from behind while stopped in traffic on a bridge. The impact catapulted him into the air, and as he ascended, he left his body and briefly glimpsed the accident scene below. He found himself flying horizontally through dark space toward a porthole of white light where he perceived God's presence. He felt overwhelming peace and joy, wanting only to reach the light, with no regrets about leaving the world behind.
When Kevin realized he wasn't getting closer to the light, he felt God was stopping him. Looking down and to his right, he saw Jesus standing in the dark space, also looking toward the light. In an instant, Kevin understood what was happening and mentally said to God, "Get me out of this one and I won't come here again without Him." He was immediately returned to his body, landing safely on the white double lines beside a vehicle, avoiding oncoming traffic. Kevin sustained only heavy bruising despite the severity of the accident. His first thought upon the driver approaching was not to get angry because "Jesus wouldn't want it." The experience transformed him from an agnostic to a follower of Jesus. For the next ten years, he hosted a Bible study group in his home, became a hospital chaplain volunteer, and left his commercial real estate career to become a librarian. The core message Kevin received was "Don't Be Afraid. I have you safe and secure. I'm holding you tight." He kept the experience private for ten years before sharing it, knowing that God is always present and that he won't be going to the light alone next time.
