On July 5, 1959, eight-year-old Ken was at a pond with his parents. While riding a small log trying to reach the center of the pond where other children were playing, he lost contact with the ground and the log rolled over. Unable to swim, Ken sank to the bottom, gasped water, and his last conscious thought was surprise that he could "breathe water." He then pushed off the bottom but hit his head on the underside of the log raft.
After a moment of black void, Ken found himself above the water facing the bank where parents were sitting on blankets, about 40 feet away. He was observing from just above the pond surface, feeling wet but with no other sensations. He watched as a man on a blanket next to his father jumped up, alerting his dad, and both men ran toward him through the water. They reached into the water to his right, pulling out his body. Ken experienced another void before awakening on a blanket surrounded by concerned people. When he insisted he had watched everything from above the water, his father said he never came up. His father seemed upset when Ken described seeing the other man react first and pull him from the water. The man had performed CPR thinking Ken might be dead. The experience left Ken feeling conflicted about religion and church teachings about resurrection. He turned away from organized religion by age 10, though the memory remained vivid and consistent throughout his life. He kept the experience largely private due to his parents' religious beliefs and their unwillingness to discuss it.
