In July 1961, seven-year-old Ken was playing at a forbidden harbor pier in Denmark with his friend Peter. They were jumping between a log raft and the dock when Ken fell into the water and couldn't swim. He sank vertically, hit the bottom, pushed up but struck his head on the raft above, and lost consciousness.
During his near-death experience, Ken found himself in complete darkness with a luminous angel-like figure who appeared behind him and called him by his nickname "Kukke." The angel showed Ken his entire life on a movie reel from birth to that moment, stopping at times when he had lied or stolen to explain how these actions affected others. The angel explained there was meaning and a plan for Ken's life, telling him he would return to heal sick people and do things with music. Ken begged to stay in this peaceful, loving place but was sent back. Ken was pulled from the water by his friend Peter who grabbed his hair, with help from an adult who performed artificial respiration. He had been underwater and unconscious for an extended period. The man thought Ken might be dead but successfully revived him with CPR. Ken awoke feeling incredible happiness, knowing death doesn't exist. The experience profoundly affected his entire life, though he kept it largely secret for years due to his parents' religious beliefs conflicting with what he experienced.
