A man spent 5-10 days in the critical care unit with infectious colitis. During a crisis, he rose above his body observing the ICU room with frantic, confused doctors. He saw his deceased maternal grandfather, appearing much younger at about 35, yelling at the doctors and telling them what to do. The room and Earth slowly moved away from him, noting no stars in space and clouds on Earth. He stopped moving and became aware of a great energy source behind him that he could feel against his back. He contemplated whether to turn and face the energy, knowing there might be no return, or go back for his young children who needed a father. The instant he decided to return for his children, he was back in his body. The experience eliminated his fear of death and gave him greatly enhanced empathy. His wife confirms he was profoundly changed, saying he now "sees people" for who they really are. He learned to trust this new ability. The experience remains crystal clear in his memory, and he occasionally has premonitions of meaningless events that later occur, including knowing who's calling before answering the phone.
