In September 2002 during the Harvest Moon, Beth attempted suicide with serious intent, taking a huge number of sedatives mixed with alcohol. She had many previous overdoses due to severe mental illness. At one point she was crawling on the floor, able to move only by fingertips, lapsing in and out of consciousness. She experienced her whole life again with emotions attached at lightning speed. She encountered a tremendous engulfing darkness and void. Unlike typical NDEs, this was a frightening experience characterized by terror rather than peace. The next day after recovery, she felt a lifting up and relief, beginning a Buddhist spiritual quest for enlightenment. For months afterward, she experienced moments of clarity with visions of the whole world, amazing peace (unusual for her mental state), and wholeness. She was no longer suicidal or depressed. As a writer, she began writing with unprecedented passion. She had enlightenment experiences that made Buddhist philosophy suddenly make profound sense. The experience produced tangible changes in her life and relationships, though the special states only lasted a few months.

--- Biblical Summary ---
Biblical elements: The experience includes a rapid life review consistent with the biblical concept of life assessment at death. The void or darkness could parallel the "outer darkness" mentioned in Matthew 8:12. The subsequent transformation and freedom from suicidal ideation reflects the life-changing nature of spiritual encounters.

Unbiblical elements: The experience led directly to Buddhist enlightenment rather than Christian conversion. The embrace of Buddhist philosophy, including concepts of enlightenment and seeing the world as a poem, represents a non-Christian spiritual framework. The temporary nature of the transformation (lasting only months) differs from biblical accounts of lasting spiritual renewal.
