On August 31, 2007, Grant suffered a catastrophic football injury resulting in a Jefferson fracture of C1 vertebra, chipped C5-C6, and massive concussion. His body went into convulsions indicating brain stem damage and brief clinical death. During the injury, time froze visually while he could still hear everything around him. Everything appeared in black and white but frozen as he fell backwards in slow motion. He then began floating upward toward the sky, seeing his own body below. He felt no fear, only peaceful confusion without concern. He could see all around and up to the clouds as everything became brighter. Suddenly he snapped back into his body to find medical staff holding him down. Despite being told he should have died or been paralyzed, he made a full recovery after 6 months in a titanium brace. He describes being lifted toward heaven before being sent back as it wasn't his time.
