On June 11, 2019, William was in a motorcycle accident when his helmet got stuck under a truck's front axle. Police jacked up the truck and he was evacuated by helicopter where he died and was resuscitated. He found himself in a large field approaching a fence with a gate, behind which appeared as a black hole. The closer to the gate, the more love and warmth he felt while selfishness fell away. A man stopped him 5 steps from the gate, saying he'd been watching William's mistakes. The being offered a choice many don't receive: return to fix life's wrongs or pass through the gate where regrets would torment his soul "like an eternity." He warned if William returned but didn't become better, he would yearn for death. William chose to return, let go of the gate, and heard "I'll see you again, very soon." He awoke seeing his mother, underwent multiple surgeries, relearned to walk, and now jogs miles. Since the NDE, he experiences heightened empathy, feels others' emotions, lost sociopathic tendencies, and feels remorse for his past.
