At age 25, Wan Fu attempted suicide with sleeping pills due to severe depression from muscle atrophy, wheelchair confinement since age 16, and business failure. Initially expecting peaceful death, he experienced excruciating burning pain throughout his organs as if drinking sulfuric acid, while remaining conscious but unable to move or call for help. After endless suffering, warmth enveloped him like being in his parents' embrace. His brain exploded with memories - every life detail shown visually like a revolving lantern, re-experiencing everything from first and second person perspectives. He found himself in his childhood home with his deceased father who told him "You still have something to do" and expressed concern for his mother. His father's voice grew louder, forcing him back to his body. He awoke in the hospital surrounded by family and friends. Since then he feels he can see two worlds simultaneously and questions which reality is real, experiencing ongoing fearful and anxious events.
