Following a severe car accident where Steve tested God by driving drunk at high speeds, he suffered multiple pelvic fractures and spent months in traction. During recovery in April 1993, while sleeping, his breathing and circulation stopped. He experienced walking along a muddy river with a fishing pole, finding a crystal clear spring from a rock. After encountering a bald man near a Tree who asked for $6 to fish, angels grabbed him and he witnessed a vortex opening in the sky revealing thousands of angels singing praises to the Lamb of God. At the apex was Jesus Christ as gatekeeper, with intense light emanating from behind Him and through His eyes. The experience ended when he regained physical sensation, feeling his whole body prickly as blood flow resumed. Steve interprets the muddy river as his sinful life, the spring as Living Waters of the Word, the Rock as Jesus, the Tree as the Tree of Life, and the bald man as Satan trying to sell salvation.
