Gene was severely allergic to wasp stings and was stung multiple times after stepping on a yellow jacket nest while picking apples barefoot. The stings felt like electric shocks. She went inside to tell her husband Jimmy she needed the hospital but collapsed trying to change clothes, eyes rolling back. Jimmy dragged her to the car and drove with one hand while holding her head forward so vomit wouldn't choke her. At the hospital, staff noted her blue lips and fingertips. In the emergency room, she stopped fighting to breathe and felt relaxed, thinking of her parents who had lost another child three months earlier. She felt calm seeing white light ahead, not too far away, and sensed her recently deceased brother very close. She felt torn between needing to stay for her parents and wanting to see her brother. The light was peaceful but she felt she should stay. She thought she could see medical staff from an outside view while they seemed frantic, though she felt calm. She began coming back, seeing a heart-shaped rash forming on her foot. Staff said the rash unusually appeared at the end rather than beginning of the episode. The experience left her calm knowing death will be peaceful with somewhere else to go.
