Elaine was 21 weeks pregnant when gestational diabetes caused her to pass out while driving at 55 mph, resulting in a head-on collision with a delivery truck. She remembers briefly coming to in the car, thinking she was napping, then everything went dark as she flatlined. She was loaded into an ambulance, screaming that she was pregnant, then flatlined again. At the hospital, she underwent 16 hours of surgery for severe internal injuries including a ruptured uterus requiring hysterectomy. Her baby died from the impact, and she suffered a shattered kneecap, broken hip, femur, ankle, and pelvis. During her third death when her lungs collapsed after ventilator removal, she found herself surrounded by darkness. She felt like a single atom connected to all atoms around her, experiencing absolute consciousness and serenity. She was aware of everything in the darkness and felt part of it all, content with pure existence. When shocked back to life, she woke to crying family and relieved doctors. The experience left her feeling that existence continues after death in a form of oneness with the universe, though she no longer believes in God or the Bible as she was raised to believe.
