At age 4, Douglas jumped into a canal without his swim buoy life preserver and immediately sank as he couldn't swim. He pushed off the bottom multiple times trying to reach the dock but grew weaker with each attempt. Water filled his lungs and he experienced intense pain before giving up. At the moment he accepted death, he felt immense calm, comfort, and safety in pitch black surroundings with a peaceful presence. He heard a deep baritone male voice say "It's not your time." Instantly he found himself hovering 20 feet above the canal watching his father drag his body to shore and push water from his lungs. He slowly descended while watching the resuscitation efforts, realizing the body below was his own. When close to his body, he felt water leave his mouth and began coughing, returning to consciousness with painful heartbeats. His father had saved his life. The experience convinced him consciousness is not produced by the brain and continues after death, as his awareness persisted while his body lay at the canal bottom.
