Daniel underwent lower back surgery in February 2015. Post-surgery, he was not supposed to receive pain medication but a nurse gave him morphine with a self-administration pump that lacked a shut-off switch. He overdosed, shooting himself up about 52 times with morphine. His wife noticed him turning blue and called for help. By the time the nurse arrived, Daniel had coded and passed away. During his clinical death, he saw a tunnel with white light at the end and headed toward it. There he encountered his deceased grandmother. They talked for what seemed like hours, with Daniel telling her about his marriage and two daughters. He apologized for not being there for her last day and told her he loved and missed her. She said she was his guardian angel looking over him. When she told him "You have to go now," he wanted to stay but she called him for a hug. As he went to hug her, he woke up gasping for air. CPR and defibrillator had been used to revive him. He had to relearn to walk and experienced ongoing back pain and leg numbness.
