Charlie intentionally overdosed on heroin on Easter weekend following family rejection. This was his third overdose but not his first brush with death, having survived stabbings, IED explosions in Iraq, and car accidents. He was found without pulse or breathing by a veteran friend who performed CPR until EMTs arrived. During his clinical death, Charlie heard the voice of his grandmother who had been dead for five years telling him "Go home Charlie." This was the only thing he remembered from the experience. It took 10 shots of Narcan and 40 minutes of CPR before he started breathing on his own. When he woke up, an EMT from his high school told him "You better not go home Charlie. It took too much to get you back here." His friend confirmed Charlie had dead eyes, was glazed over with no pulse and not breathing when found. The experience convinced him that an afterlife definitely exists.
