Nathan nearly drowned at a beach after being hit by several waves and falling unconscious. A lifeguard resuscitated him, bringing him back from what became a deeply disturbing near-death experience that continues to haunt him years later. Unlike typical peaceful NDEs, Nathan's experience was characterized by darkness, pain, and a terrifying transformation that felt like it lasted for years despite occurring during his brief unconsciousness.
Upon losing consciousness, Nathan found himself in a pitch-black space where his body had transformed into rusted metal, causing severe joint pain and restricted movement. Dark figures miles tall with white glowing eyes watched him from above like a caged animal in a circus. Despite the pain, he forced himself to run toward these beings faster than ever before in his life, screaming in agony while moving on all fours. When he reached them, he discovered they were giant trees, and after running between them for what felt like years, he had created a forest. He felt like an animal trapped in a metal cage that was his body, forgetting who he was in desperate attempts to escape. Eventually finding another person in the forest after seeming years of isolation, Nathan could barely speak with a hoarse voice from screaming. The person reacted with fear and began hitting him, so he defended himself. His metal body broke the person almost immediately. This pattern repeated endlessly - finding people, trying to communicate, being attacked, defending himself, and inadvertently harming them. Each repetition made him care less and feel slight enjoyment, sensing himself losing his humanity over what felt like forever. Just before waking, Nathan saw an image of his own face - the same rusted metal but twisted and covered in blood. It screamed with his own voice as he screamed in terror. Since the experience, he has told no one, has recurring nightmares, and hasn't returned to the beach. He believes he survived to make amends for what he did in that realm or to help someone experiencing similar incomprehensible horror.
