Michael experienced a life-threatening medical crisis during treatment for a collapsed lung. After his lung collapsed for the second time at 75%, doctors offered him an experimental tetracycline procedure to fuse the pulmonary blebs and fix air leaks. On his birthday, April 9th, the tetracycline was delivered via chest tube while he was instructed to keep turning his body to distribute the liquid despite excruciating pain. After about five turns, the pain became unbearable and Michael screamed for God and Jesus before letting go and accepting his fate. The medical team called a code blue when he turned white as the sheets and went lifeless.
During his near-death state, Michael immediately felt a warm sensation with no pain whatsoever, comparing it to coming out of a cold ocean into warm sunshine. He experienced immediate comfort and had the faith of a child seeing his father. He encountered Jesus Christ, whom he recognized as the Son of God with many names. Jesus appeared brighter than the sun yet Michael could see his face clearly. They experienced a joyful reunion as if Michael had never left him, with a sense that he belonged with Jesus as all people do. Jesus spoke to him with warmth and tender authority, telling him he wasn't supposed to be home yet and needed to go back. Michael cried and begged to stay with Jesus, not wanting to return to his earthly body. Jesus comforted him as a loving father would, gently but firmly guiding him back to his body while Michael continued crying. The conversation details remained beyond recall, but the overwhelming sense of love, joy, and belonging was unmistakable. When Michael awoke, he was still crying and overwhelmed but experienced very little pain compared to before. The pulmonologist later confirmed they almost lost him during the procedure. Michael's faith was strengthened by the experience, understanding that blessed are those who believe without seeing. The experience brought him closer to understanding God's love and gave him a sense of overwhelming nostalgia for his heavenly home. He later experienced similar joy at the birth of his five children, seeing echoes of that divine love in earthly blessings.
