Mark experienced a severe medical crisis when he became septic from an intestinal leak following surgery. Delirious with fever, he attempted to go outside for relief but collapsed. After a colonoscopy revealed the problem, his condition worsened dramatically with his abdomen swelling like a basketball. The doctor had to manually rip open his partially healed surgical site to save his life, causing Mark to lose consciousness. He received last rites as medical staff fought to save him during an extended hospital stay.
During his clinical death, Mark floated above his bed observing himself covered in putrid fluids on blood-stained sheets. An ethereal being with a no-nonsense demeanor grabbed his shoulder and took him down a roughly-hewn vertical shaft that was hot, stunk, and devoid of oxygen. They flew head-first at high speed with Mark's face inches from the wall. Despite his protests, the guide accelerated and stated Mark was not in charge. The tunnel opened into a massive hellish cavern filled with sounds of anguish and filthy language. Mark landed in ankle-deep wiggling worms at the bottom. In the cavern, Mark observed a defeated black angel growing from the cave wall, encased in mineral deposits up to its elbows with one wing immobilized. Demons flew around screaming obscenities while a massive snake slithered past. A creature slammed him against the wall. When Mark was passing out from lack of air, he found a white cloth on the cave floor that became his lifesaving oasis. His guide then raised his hand to quiet things and eventually extracted him from hell, imparting far-reaching personal knowledge that later came true before heading toward a bright white light. Mark returned to his body floating above it in a different room, cleaned and intubated. His teeth felt hot as he re-entered his body. Though he was hospitalized for an extended period, he only retains vague memories of two days. The experience destroyed his previous life but provided him with prophetic knowledge that has since been validated.
