Liam experienced a spontaneous pneumothorax requiring emergency chest tube insertion. During the procedure, he was given no pain medication and the surgeon inserted the chest tube through his rib cartilage. The extreme pain caused his heart rate to drop to 3 beats per minute, leading to a code blue situation where medical staff thought they had lost him.
During this critical moment, Liam had an out-of-body experience. He found himself floating above his body on the operating table, able to see everyone in the room clearly. He experienced no pain at this point, describing a warm feeling similar to coming out of a cold ocean and walking into the sun on the beach. The warmth and comfort were immediate and complete. He saw an incredibly bright light that was brilliant yet soft, not burning like the sun. The light was both pure white and warm yellow simultaneously. While floating above his body, Liam could see and hear the surgeon giving orders and the staff responding to the emergency. He prayed desperately to God not to take him, begging that he wasn't ready to die. He remembers clearly telling God repeatedly that he didn't want to die. The surgeon later confirmed what Liam had observed, telling him they had almost lost him when his heart rate dropped so dramatically. Liam describes the experience as having an intensity and alertness he had never experienced before or since. He felt united with the world and experienced a sense of relief and calmness despite the critical nature of his medical situation. The experience was so vivid that he remembers it more accurately than other life events from that time period. He remains certain the experience was definitely real and has shared it with others since it occurred.
