At age 14, Canon was being treated for an arteriovenous malformation when a medication error occurred. A nurse administered morphine but failed to chart it, then after shift change another nurse gave a second dose, causing an immediate reaction witnessed by his mother. Though gone for less than a minute, his consciousness left his body and he experienced the most peaceful, comforting time unlike anything on earth. He was lifted through a tunnel and greeted by shadow figures he knew were family and loved ones, feeling ecstatic. No words were spoken but he understood he had a choice with no wrong decision - stay or return to his body. He chose to return and woke to see his mother crying at his bedside. The experience completely changed his life. Since then, he has regular sleep paralysis where the same shadow figures visit him. Initially terrifying, he now knows they're checking on him. He remains certain it wasn't his time to leave and the experience gave him lasting peace about death and the afterlife.
