Bryant, an HVAC technician, was installing a ceiling fan-coil unit while standing on top of an 8-foot ladder in a 14-foot ceiling. Reaching too far, he lost balance, grabbed a sheet metal overflow pan that cut his fingers, then crashed to the cement floor hitting the back of his head and losing consciousness. While unconscious, he was aware he was dying and felt at complete peace with life ending. He reflected on living a good life and raising his daughter well, having put her through college at age 25. He was entirely at peace with death approaching. Then he drifted up through the building's roof and saw heat pumps he had mounted there, thinking with distress "oh sh*#, more work!" - disrupting his peace. His helper then shook him awake, leading to a $2,000 ambulance ride, CT scan showing concussion, and a month of sickness and dizziness. He returned two weeks later to finish the installation. The experience permanently changed his behavior - he never again stood on the "do not stand" step of ladders despite continuing to climb them regularly without fear. His primary revelation was that life means work, even after death, expressing fear of endless work and rebirth. As a 68-year-old who had worked his entire life, he would hate for it to continue forever, seeing the afterlife as "just more work."
